Dear North Kingstown School Community,
After careful consideration, consultation with school and Town officials, and in-person visits to our school facilities and surrounding neighborhoods, I have made the decision to close school for the remainder of the week.
This decision was not made lightly. We fully recognize the importance of maintaining instructional time for our students. However, the safety of our students, staff, and families must remain our highest priority. At this time, significant conditions continue to impact our ability to safely reopen schools.
For your awareness, the following factors contributed to this decision:
More than two feet of snow must be cleared across our ten school facilities.
- The Town of North Kingstown encompasses approximately 58.3 square miles of roadways that must be widened and made safe for regular traffic and school bus travel.
- Access to neighborhood schools must be cleared to ensure safe arrival and dismissal.
- Snow piles exceeding five feet in height remain in several parking lots and walkways. Larger equipment is being brought in to assist in plowing and to relocate these piles, which currently limit visibility and pose safety concerns for students.
- Three of our schools are currently without power.
- Several school buses still require clearing.
- Our Town Department of Public Works continues to work extremely hard.
We are deeply grateful to our school maintenance teams and Town personnel who are working tirelessly to restore safe conditions throughout the community.
In addition, we understand that extended closures can create hardship for families. Our Child Nutrition staff and administrators are coordinating efforts to prepare and distribute meals to members of our school community in need. Further information regarding food availability and delivery will be shared later today.
Families who receive SNAP benefits and experienced food loss during the blizzard may qualify for replacement benefits. Additional information is available through the Rhode Island Department of Human Services.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need assistance.
Thank you

Good Evening families and staff,
Due to weather conditions and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, staff, and families, North Kingstown School Department will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27.
Please note that all preschool sessions will be cancelled for Tuesday, January 27.
Mrs. Finkelstein will send an updated exam schedule to all high school families.
This delay will allow additional time for road conditions to improve and for our teams to ensure school facilities and transportation routes are safe for arrival.
We appreciate your patience and partnership as we continue to prioritize safety. Please travel carefully and allow extra time in the morning.
Thank you for your continued support.
